Exa's TotalANALYSIS Approach to Engineering Simulation

Simulation-driven design enabled by PowerFLOW makes predictive information available earlier in the design process, permitting deeper exploration of the design space. As the graphic above illustrates, there are many different fluids-driven design challenges. And these challenges are not independent of each other. For example, reducing the size of the grille opening may reduce drag but also reduces the cooling airflow in the engine compartment. Increasing the flow rate in the HVAC can improve performance but can also increase noise. The typical engineering approach is to set attribute targets or ranges early in the design and require each team to design within these targets. This optimizes at a component or function level but is sub-optimal from a system perspective. As a result of this approach, simulation and analysis has traditionally been used within each discipline separately, with each team preparing their own separate simulation models and using separate simulation tools, with a lot of duplication of effort. The simulation tools for each discipline are specialized for that discipline on often require very specific types of mesh to be prepared to make the simulation work.

In contrast, PowerFLOW has the ability to perform  multidisciplinary design studies and optimization using a single digital model enabling engineering teams to efficiently collaborate early in the design process. Aerodynamic, thermal, and aeroacoustic simulations all use the same fully detailed geometry model, and use the same fluid solver enabling rapid design trade-offs. Exa’s proprietary Digital Physics provides a single solver for all applications, unlike traditional CFD solvers that require extensive tuning of the solver each application which requires specialized skills.
